Grain boundary etching
In materials science, a grain boundary is the interface between two grains, or crystallites, in a polycrystalline material. Grain boundaries are two-dimensional defects in the crystal structure, and tend to decrease the electrical and thermal conductivity of the material. Most grain boundaries are preferred sites for the onset of corrosion and for the precipitation of new phases from the solid. They are also important to many of the mechanisms of creep. On the other hand, grain boundaries dis…

WebThere are three basic methods of etching alloy samples – immersion, swabbing and electrolytic. In the first method, the sample is immersed in the etching solution until the desired structure is developed. WebJul 1, 2024 · Corrosionpedia Explains Etching. The etching process is usually done to monitor twin planes, grain boundaries, phase articles as well as microstructural constituents. It also exposes the propensity of a material toward particular corrosion mechanisms. For instance, there are materials that etch easily compared to others.
