Inchkeith is approximately half the size of the Isle of May at the mouth of the Firth, but is higher. Although most of the island is of volcanic origin, the island’s geology is surprisingly varied. Inchkeith, unlike some of the other islands, was not fortified in the Napoleonic Wars but, with Kinghorn, was the site of the first modern defences, manned from 1881 until 1956.
